A parable of Jesus · Part 21 of 21 · 4 min
The Lamp That Is Not Hidden
Jesus used familiar things when he taught people. He spoke about seeds, roads, and houses to help them understand God’s love. One day he explained a lesson using a small light: a lamp that lights a room.

In those days, many homes were lit with oil lamps. These were small clay containers holding oil and a burning wick. When night came, that little flame helped people see what was around them. Even a small light could be very useful in a dark home.
Jesus asked his listeners to think about where a burning lamp belongs. No one lights it to hide it under a container or under a bed. Its light would not help the people who need it there. A lamp belongs up on a stand, where it can give light.
Imagine a home as evening comes. A lamp on its stand helps people see the table, the bread, and their family’s faces. Its light does not belong only to the person who lit it. It reaches everyone in the house. This helps us understand the comparison Jesus was teaching.

Then Jesus explained that his followers should be like a light in the world. He also spoke about a city on a hill that people can see from far away. Those who receive his love can show it to others. What they learn from God does not need to stay hidden.
Letting our light shine does not mean seeking applause or saying we are better than others. Jesus taught that our good actions can help people recognize the goodness of our heavenly Father. Even a small kindness can show his love when it comes from a sincere heart.
Now imagine someone who needs help. We can share bread with someone who is hungry, listen to someone who is sad, or help pick up something another person dropped. These are simple ways to practice this teaching. Kindness becomes visible when we do something to help someone.

The book Christ’s Object Lessons explains that Christ’s light is reflected through his followers as they show his love and care for other people’s needs. Knowing beautiful words is not enough if we do not learn to live them. God can change our hearts so that our words and actions show his goodness.
Sometimes helping is difficult. We may want to keep playing, or we may find it hard to apologize. We can ask Jesus to teach us to love and choose a first step. Perhaps we can return a toy, invite someone to join us, or help with a job at home. We do not have to wait until we are grown up to begin.
A lamp fulfills its purpose when it can give light. We can share the love we receive from Jesus with the people near us. Today we can choose one kind action and do it with joy. Like a light that is not hidden, our lives can help others discover God’s love.

A Light and a Helping Hand
Materials: a flashlight or LED light and a sheet of paper. 1. A grown-up sets the light on a stable table and points to two nearby things that are easier to see. Do not look directly into the beam. 2. Take turns: each person names someone at home and one specific way to help, such as putting away three toys or taking a napkin to the table. 3. Each person does the chosen job while everyone else waits for their turn. 4. Draw one of the helpful actions you completed. Anyone who wants to share holds up the drawing and says whom they helped and what they did. Ask: “How did this help show God’s love?”
Choose one small way to help today and do it without seeking applause.
