Water and Sky Fill with Life

The water and sky were ready. There was light for the day, lights for the night, and plants on the land. On the fifth day, something wonderful happened: those spaces began filling with living creatures.

God commanded the waters to teem with living creatures and birds to fly above the earth. The sea was no longer only a landscape of water. Now life was moving within it.

We can imagine fish of different colors swimming among underwater plants. Some are small and move together. Others have different shapes. Beneath the surface is a world we cannot always see from the shore.

God also created the great sea creatures. We can imagine the water moving when one of them comes to the surface and dives again. Creation includes both the tiny and the enormous.

Birds appeared above the land. Now there really were wings crossing the sky and birds among the branches. The space that had been quiet could fill with songs and fluttering wings.

Some birds have long beaks; others have small ones. Their feathers show different colors. We do not need to know all their names to pause and watch without frightening them or harming the place where they live.

God blessed those living creatures. He gave them the ability to multiply and fill the waters and the earth with life. He saw that what he had created was good. The fifth day was drawing to a close.

The Bible invites us to see that all that variety had its place in God’s care. A fish hidden underwater and a bird passing above us belong to the same world full of gifts.

When we find a bird, we can speak softly and watch from a respectful distance. We can also care for rivers and beaches by picking up our litter with a grown-up’s help. Enjoying creation includes protecting other creatures’ homes.

Evening passed, and morning came. The waters had their inhabitants, and the sky was filled with wings. There was still another part of the story: the animals that would walk on the land.

Activity · 2–5 minutes

A clean home for animals

Imagine a table is the bank of a river. An adult places three clean pieces of paper on it as pretend litter. Pick them up together and put them in the correct container. Talk about how taking your litter home helps animals. When you go out, collect only your own litter with an adult; do not touch dangerous objects.

Try it today: I can watch animals respectfully and take my litter home to care for their habitats.
