Lights for Day and Night

Plants already covered the land. The seas had their shores, and the sky stretched above them. Now the creation story reached the fourth day.

God made the lights in the sky to separate day from night and to mark seasons, days, and years. Our world would have a way to recognize the passing of time.

God prepared the lights in the sky to mark the days and nights.

The greater light would shine during the day. We know it as the sun. We can imagine its light on the green hills, on trees heavy with fruit, and on the waters of the seas.

The sun shone on the green hills.
The sun shone on the green hills.

The lesser light would shine during the night. We know it as the moon. Its presence in the night sky would be different from the sun’s, but it would have its own place in creation.

The moon shone at night.

The Bible adds a few simple words that hold an enormous wonder: God also made the stars. When we look into a dark sky, we can see little points of light far more numerous than we can count.

There were no people watching that sky yet. God was preparing the home before its inhabitants arrived. The lights of day and night were part of that care.

God also made the stars.
God also made the stars.

God saw that it was good. Evening passed, and morning came, and the fourth day ended. Creation continued with order and beauty.

Today we can recognize different times: a time to get up, another to play, and another to rest. When we look at the sky with a grown-up, we can search for the moon or some stars and give thanks for the world we share.

We do not have to find something new to feel wonder. Each morning’s sun and a quiet night’s moon can invite us to look again. The lights were in place; soon the water and sky would be filled with movement.

Activity · 2–5 minutes

A time for each thing

Choose three moments of the day: waking up, playing, and sleeping. Each person acts out one with a gesture while the others guess. Put them in order together and talk about how rest helps us care for our bodies. Thank God for day and night.

Try it today: I can enjoy the day and get ready to rest when night comes.
