David: From the Flock to the Kingdom · Part 1 of 20 · 4 min
The Shepherd of the Hills
The hills around Bethlehem stretched beneath the sky. David, Jesse’s youngest son, lived there. While his older brothers attended to other things, he went into the countryside with the family’s sheep. They needed someone to watch over them.
The flock needed an attentive shepherd. Sheep could not find every safe place by themselves. David had to stay with them, find food, and lead them to water. That simple work filled many hours of his days.

Walking through the hills, he learned to know the land. One path climbed between stones; another led toward grass. David watched where the animals went. He could not forget them while looking for something else to do.
There was water to find, too. The shepherd led his flock somewhere they could come close and drink. Waiting while the sheep rested was part of his work, just as leading them onward was when it was time to move.
Outdoors, David noticed the things God had made. Hills, trees, and sky reminded him of God’s care. His life held peaceful moments, but being a shepherd did not mean that he was always safe from danger.

Later, David told how a lion and a bear had threatened the flock. He had defended his sheep. This was no adventure for fun. He was protecting the animals that had been placed in his care.
David did not think all that strength came from himself alone. Remembering those dangers, he acknowledged that God had rescued him. His trust grew as he did his work and learned to look to God for help.
Most of his jobs, however, did not look extraordinary. He had to keep walking, watch the flock, and notice what the sheep needed. There was no crowd around David to celebrate every small thing he did.

He also learned to make music. With his instrument, he could express thanks and think about God. His voice and melodies belonged to a life in the hills, still very far from the rooms of a palace.
As evening came, the colors of the land changed. The sheep still needed to stay together under their shepherd’s care. David’s day did not end simply when he grew tired. His responsibility still needed his attention.
Anyone looking only at the young shepherd and his sheep would not have seen a crown. David was learning to care. God knew his life in the fields, the choices he made, and what was in his heart.

Before David led many people, he had sheep to guide and daily work to finish. The hills were a place to learn. There a boy was growing, trusting God while he cared for what was close at hand.
