David: From the Flock to the Kingdom · Part 9 of 20 · 4 min

Abigail Stops the Anger

A wealthy man named Nabal owned many sheep. David and his men had stayed near his shepherds without harming them. They had even protected the shepherds while they watched their flocks out in the open countryside.

The time came to shear the sheep. It was a season of plenty and shared food. David sent men to greet Nabal and ask for supplies, reminding him that his shepherds had been safe while David’s men were nearby.

Nabal answered with contempt. He refused to share his food and spoke as though David deserved no consideration. The messengers returned empty-handed and reported what they had heard. His answer stirred David’s anger.

David decided to march out with armed men and punish Nabal and his household. This would have been a terrible, unjust revenge. He had been insulted, but he was preparing to cause far greater harm to other people.

A servant spoke to Abigail, Nabal’s wife. He described the treatment of the messengers and explained that David’s men had protected the shepherds. Now the whole household was in danger because of Nabal’s answer.

Abigail acted quickly. She prepared bread, fruit, and other supplies and had them loaded onto donkeys. Then she went to meet David. She did not bring an army to stop another army. She brought food and courageous words.

On the road, Abigail saw David and approached respectfully. She asked him to listen. She recognized the seriousness of the situation and offered the supplies. Her request did not make Nabal’s behavior good or justify David’s revenge.

Abigail reminded David that God had promised him a future. He did not need to reach it carrying guilt for revenge. He could still stop and avoid harm that he would never be able to undo, even if he regretted it.

David listened. The woman before him was helping him see something his anger had hidden. Having men ready to follow did not make his decision right. His strength needed restraint. Stopping the violence was his responsibility.

Then David changed course. He thanked God for sending Abigail and acknowledged her wisdom. He also thanked her for keeping him from taking revenge. Accepting correction was better than continuing simply because he was too proud to stop.

He received the food and let Abigail return in peace. His men did not continue with the attack they had prepared. On that road, a dangerous decision ended before it became the harm that threatened an entire household.

David listens, stops, and gives thanks.

Abigail had spoken courageously. David had needed to listen and stop his men. Peace was not her responsibility alone. That day, David recognized his mistake in time and gave thanks that someone had helped him change his decision.

Prepare and listen

Prepare a simple snack with an adult. Share out napkins and fruit the adult has already cut. Before eating, practice a sentence for receiving correction: Thank you for telling me; I will change that. Discuss a small time when listening helped everyone.

Try it today: If anger is leading you to hurt someone, stop and accept help to change your choice.
