A Companion on the Road
Two followers of Jesus were walking to a village called Emmaus. They were talking about the things that had happened in Jerusalem.
Their feet followed the road away from the city.
They were sad and confused. Jesus had died, and now some women had reported that his tomb was empty.
Another traveler joined them. It was Jesus, but they did not recognize him.
He asked what they were discussing. They told him about their lost hopes and the surprising news.

Jesus began to explain what the Scriptures said about the Messiah. God's plan had not failed, even though they had not understood it.
As they listened, hope began to grow in their hearts.
When they reached the village, they asked him to stay. At the table, he took bread, blessed it, and broke it.
The friends gathered around the table.
Then their eyes were opened. They recognized Jesus, and he disappeared from their sight.
They hurried back to Jerusalem to share what had happened. Their lonely road had become a road of hope.
We can listen to a friend who is discouraged and learn together from God's Word. Jesus cares about people whose questions are still unfinished.
Retelling of Luke 24:13–35.
