A miracle of Jesus · Part 19 of 20 · 3 min

Lazarus Came Out of the Tomb

Lazarus lived in Bethany with his sisters Martha and Mary. All three were Jesus' friends, and their home was a place where he could rest.

One day Lazarus became ill. His sisters sent a message to Jesus to tell him what was happening.

Jesus did not arrive immediately. When he came to Bethany, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days.

Martha and Mary were very sad. They told Jesus about their pain and the trust they had in him.

Jesus wept too.

He did not watch their tears from far away. He loved this family and shared their sadness.

Jesus stands with Martha and Mary near a stone tomb, without frightening scenes.
Jesus stayed with Martha and Mary in their sorrow.

Then they went to the place where Lazarus lay. A stone covered the entrance.

Jesus asked them to move the stone. Martha remembered how much time had passed, but he invited her to trust.

Jesus thanked his Father. Then he called Lazarus to come out.

Lazarus came out of the tomb alive.

He was still wearing the cloths in which he had been wrapped. Jesus asked the others to help remove them so he could walk freely.

Lazarus walks alive from a stone entrance as his sisters rejoice with Jesus.
Lazarus was with his family again.

This miracle shows Jesus' power over death and his love for those who suffer.

It also reminds us that crying does not mean we lack trust. Jesus cried beside his friends.

When a family is sad, we can listen and stay with them without rushing them to feel better.

Jesus' hope does not make us hide our pain. It invites us to know we are loved in the middle of it.

His promise of life helps us look ahead with trust.

Jesus cares and helps, and we can share his kindness.

Retelling of John 11:1–44.
