Seth and Enoch: A Friendship with God

Adam and Eve had been through a very sad time. Abel had died, and they missed him.

Some time later, another son was born. Eve named him Seth and thanked God for his arrival. In a family that had known so much sorrow, a new life was beginning.

Seth grew up listening to his father's teaching. Adam told him about God and the promise of a Savior. Seth learned to trust the Lord and wanted to follow his ways.

When Seth became a father, he named his son Enosh. In those days, people began to call on God's name: they sought him and spoke to him in prayer.

The years passed. The family grew, and new generations were born.

Among Seth's descendants was a man named Enoch. His father's name was Jared. Enoch also had a family and a son named Methuselah.

The Bible tells us something very special about him: Enoch walked with God.

What does that mean?

Enoch lived trusting God. He asked for his help and wanted to please him with his choices. His friendship with the Lord was part of his everyday life.

Around him, there were people who caused great harm. Enoch did not want to follow their example.

He told others about God's love and urged them to turn away from their wrong ways. Some people listened; others made fun of him. Even so, Enoch kept sharing what he had learned.

He also looked for quiet moments to pray. After spending time among the people, he would go away to talk with God and learn to do his will.

For many years, Enoch lived this way: trusting, praying, and helping others to know the Lord.

Then something extraordinary happened.

God took Enoch to be with him. Enoch did not have to die.

His story left a beautiful hope: God had not forgotten the people who trusted him.

Seth had shared what he knew about God with his family. Generations later, Enoch had lived that faith every day.

We, too, can know God, talk to him in prayer, and ask him to help us do what is right.

That friendship can begin today.

Based on Genesis 4:25–26; 5:18–24; Hebrews 11:5.
