David: From the Flock to the Kingdom · Part 7 of 20 · 4 min

A Refuge for One Another

David had left the palace and many familiar places behind. He was seeking shelter far from Saul. He came to the cave of Adullam, a place among the rocks where he could stop without returning within the king’s reach.

David did not know how long he would need to keep fleeing. The young man Samuel had anointed was not king yet. He needed to wait and seek direction.

Soon his family learned where he was. His brothers and the rest of his father’s household came to join him. David was no longer alone in the shelter. Familiar people arrived to share an uncertain part of his life.

Other men began coming too. Some were in trouble, some had debts, and some were deeply unhappy. They did not come because life was easy. They had heard of David and gathered around him in the middle of their problems.

These people had different needs, and they needed some order in their life together. David became their leader. About four hundred men gathered with him. Keeping company also meant learning to live together and accepting responsibilities within the group.

The place that had sheltered one fugitive became a refuge for many. There were families to care for, supplies to arrange, and decisions to make. David was beginning to lead people before he had a throne or palace of his own.

His father and mother were among those who needed special care. David could not think only about what he could endure himself. He needed to consider where they could live and what help might keep them protected during this time.

David traveled to Moab and spoke with its king. He asked if his parents could stay there until he knew what God would do for him. Even without knowing the ending, he could address a need right in front of him.

His parents remained in Moab while David stayed in his stronghold. Caring for family was part of waiting. Trust did not mean doing nothing. It helped him look for an answer for the people depending on him.

Later, the prophet Gad gave David a message. He should not remain in that stronghold. He should go into the land of Judah. The time had come to leave the place that had provided protection for a while.

David listened and set out. He went to the forest of Hereth in Judah. The cave would not be his home forever. He still needed to learn how to guide the group and follow the direction God gave him.

Adullam became part of his journey: a hard season he did not have to spend alone. His family and people in need had come there. In uncertainty, companionship and care for others helped them find a way forward.
